Rocky River - Interior E-Design Transformation

In the heart of Rocky River, Ohio—an area known for its charming homes and lakeside views—my client wanted to update her cozy townhome. Though the space had served her well, as her daughter was growing older, she felt it was time for a refresh. We leveraged my interior e-design expertise to transform her first floor, exploring how different layouts, colors, and furniture configurations could breathe new life into her home.

Client’s Vision and Challenges

My client has a deep connection to Rocky River, having grown up there, and wanted her home to evolve as her daughter grew older. While she had a clear vision for the space, her busy schedule made it hard to focus on the details. That’s where I stepped in—offering multiple design options that gave her the comfort and functionality she needed. Our goal was to refresh the first floor with new furniture layouts and versatile spaces for hosting friends, all while keeping the cozy, welcoming atmosphere she loved.

Project Scope

The first floor was comprised of the kitchen, a large backroom - that she wanted to include a dining room and living room - and a den/office. The goal was to explore various aesthetics, furniture layouts, and multifunctional uses for the spaces, all while considering the client’s lifestyle needs and the importance of creating a warm, inviting environment.

Design Concept 1: Bright and Cozy with a Familiar Layout

Main Characteristics:

  • In this concept, we kept the kitchen's existing footprint but introduced lighter and brighter elements, with white cabinets creating a fresh, airy look.

  • The green carpet in the back room was removed, showing hardwood or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), and using rugs to separate the living and dining areas. A large, comfy couch anchored the living room, while baby blue built-ins added a splash of color. The walls around the back room entrance were adorned with a gallery of art pieces, creating a cohesive flow.

  • The den was made cozy yet functional with a pull-out couch and storage on both sides, complete with a mirror at the entrance.

What Made This Concept Special:

This design highlighted the warmth and familiarity the client desired while enhancing it with elegant touches. The built-ins provided functional storage and added character to the room, while the use of rugs helped define and elevate the space. The back room became a flexible retreat, perfect for relaxation or hosting guests, while still being functional for everyday life with a child.

Design Concept 2: Modern and Open with a Functional Flow

Main Characteristics:

  • This concept reimagined the kitchen layout by flipping the direction of the island, optimizing space, and adding a stone-style backsplash. The cabinets remained white, with new light fixtures to add style.

  • In the back room, we kept the built-ins along the wall but transitioned half of the units to open shelving. Instead of a large sectional, the living room featured a cozy couch with oversized art above, and two accent chairs framed the fireplace. The dining area became a restaurant-style seating nook with a bench and chairs, compact but functional.

  • The den was converted into a game room with ample storage, a drop zone for boots near the backyard door, and a Murphy bed for added versatility.

What Made This Concept Special:

This design emphasized maximizing space and functionality without sacrificing comfort. The island reconfiguration opened up the kitchen, making it easier to move around. The open shelving added a modern touch to the back room, while the game table and Murphy bed transformed the den into a versatile space perfect for both family time and hosting guests.

Design Concept 3: Bold and Personalized with Multi-Functional Spaces

Main Characteristics:

  • In this concept, we deepened the color palette by introducing darker-toned cabinets in the kitchen and adding a mudroom area with a small bench and storage.

  • The back room maintained its flow, with accent chairs by the fireplace and a re-toned sofa. Built-in cabinets were replaced with open shelving, and a collage wall above the sofa became the perfect space for family photos and memories. Blinds were swapped with curtains, and new light fixtures enhanced the overall ambiance.

  • The den was transformed into a flexible office/game room, featuring a large table, bulletin board, and console table by the backyard entrance.

What Made This Concept Special:

This design was all about personalization and creating multi-functional spaces. The darker cabinets in the kitchen and the introduction of the mudroom added both style and practicality. The collage wall brought a personal touch, making the big room feel more like home, while the den’s transformation into an office/game room added a layer of functionality that suited my client’s evolving needs.

Before and After: A Complete Transformation Made Possible by Interior E-Design

The changes across all three design concepts transformed the Rocky River townhome from a functional but dated space into a personalized, multi-functional haven. The kitchen saw fresh layouts, with lighter or darker tones depending on the concept, and the introduction of a mudroom added practicality. The back room evolved into a cohesive area with defined spaces for living and dining, while the den became a versatile game room or office, meeting both the client’s personal and family needs. From a hodgepodge of areas to a thoughtfully designed home, this reimagination has become a space where memories are sure to be made.
